ForeScout Protects Top 10 Credit Union from Worm Attacks

Blaster attacks automatically prevented before network infection

SAN MATEO, Calif.—October 22, 2003—ForeScout Technologies, Inc. announced today that its technology successfully prevented all Blaster worm attacks from infecting the networks of Patelco Credit Union, one of the ten largest credit unions in the United States. The Blaster worm, which infected more than one million systems worldwide in August and continues to circulate, was automatically blocked by ForeScout's patented technology.

"Our system was hit with over 2,000 attacks within a week, almost all related to the Blaster worm," said John Shields, Patelco's senior vice president of e-business. "ForeScout stopped the worm immediately without any signatures or manual intervention, even before we recognized the worm's existence. A lot of companies were hit hard by this attack… meanwhile, we just went on with business as usual."

ForeScout's unique approach to security stops attacks by accurately identifying and blocking the source. Self-propagating worms are recognized and cut off immediately to prevent damage from spreading through the network. Automatically blocking both known and zero-day attacks, ForeScout's technology protects the internal network from worm-infected remote and mobile users as well as threats at the perimeter.

"Worms often strike outside of business hours, when staff is not immediately available to react," continued Shields. "By preventing the spread of worms through our systems, ForeScout allows us to fix any potential problems before widespread damage shuts us down. With extensive ATM networks, online services and other critical operations, security is a tremendous priority for us."

"ForeScout has developed a completely unique approach to identifying and preventing attacks at the source that does not require signature management or exhaustive tuning by IT departments," said Eric Ogren, Senior Analyst of Security Solutions & Services for Yankee Group. "The company's technology applies the worm's most glaring weakness - lack of network configuration knowledge - into an easy to use solution to mitigate the damaging effects of worm storms."

"Rapidly-spreading worms continue to plague enterprises worldwide, and the problem has grown increasingly worse over the last year. While ForeScout's security methods are extremely effective against a wide range of attacks, our ability to prevent the spread of worms is clearly a key benefit for our customers," said Kent Elliot, CEO of ForeScout Technologies. "These automated attacks become more complex with every iteration, and companies that fail to protect against them will not be able to maintain a viable business from a technology standpoint."
